Parting Locks
Parting locks, often referred to as parting tools or cut-off tools, are specialized tools used in machining operations, particularly on lathes. Their primary function is to cut through a workpiece to separate a finished part from the remaining stock material.
Usage and Techniques
Setup: The parting tool is mounted perpendicular to the axis of the rotating workpiece. Proper alignment is crucial to prevent deflection
and ensure a straight cut.
Cutting Parameters: Speed, feed rate, and depth of cut must be carefully controlled to avoid tool breakage and achieve a smooth finish. Higher speeds might be used with
coolant to dissipate heat.
Coolant: Using coolant is often recommended to reduce heat buildup, prolong tool life, and improve surface finish.
